Nathaniel Johnson built the original Nathanial Johnson house in 1817 for his bride, Sophia Patten from Newbury. The boards and timber for the house were prepared by his father’s mill located on Cottle's Creek, about a ⅓ mile away from the Nathaniel Johnson House. The lumber was hauled by oxen and neighbors helped raise the house.
This property was built with three main buildings, the first being the Federal Style home, which housed Nathaniel, Sophia, and their six children. The other properties include the carriage house, built to house horse-drawn carriages, and a barn. Today the main house and the carriage house remain. Charming features from the original house are preserved including the now decorative fireplaces and the still functional "Indian Shutters", shutters on the interior that slide into the wall.
